5 Great DIY Kitty Beds

Is your cat sleeping right now? There’s a pretty good chance that she is. Our feline friends certainly are sleepy little furballs. Fluffy can spend a whopping 20 hours a day snoozing. That’s more than almost any other mammal on the planet! While kitties don’t mind settling down on their humans’ couches, chairs, or laps at naptime, they do like having some comfy beds of their own. You can buy your pet some cute beds, but you can also make your own. Below, an Isle of Palms, SC vet lists some great DIY cat bed ideas.

Retro/Vintage Style

A hard-shell suitcase can make an attractive kitty bed. You can also upcycle an old, standalone television set or a large computer monitor into a cat bed: just remove the electronics, and clean it carefully. To make Fluffy’s bed more attractive, paint it and/or finish the interior with contact paper or fabric. Then, just add some pillows or folded blankets.

Sweater Bed

An old sweater or sweatshirt can make a cozy little bed for your sleepy pet. Fill the sleeves and torso with stuffing, and sew the wrists, neck, and waist openings closed. Then, sew it together into a round or oval shape.

Relaxing Hammock

Hammocks are great for those hot summer days! They’re cooler than regular beds, because air can flow beneath them. To make your feline friend a hammock, you’ll need an end table or coffee table with four legs. Cut a piece of material so that it’s a little smaller than the tabletop. Then, simply attach the corners of the fabric to the table legs.

Upcycled Furniture

Old furniture can make beautiful cat beds! Get an end table with doors, and remove the doors, making a little hidey-hole. You can also get an end table with four legs, and turn it upside down. Decorate the piece with varnish, paint, stencils, or contact paper, and add pillows or blankets.

Craft Beds

Did you know that you can make a cute pet tent out of an old tee shirt and a wire hangar? You can also make Fluffy a kitty tipi, though you may need to go to a craft store for dowels and material. Look online for step-by-step instructions. (Tip: these make great rainy-day projects for kids!)
