Car Rides With Fluffy

Did you know that August 22nd is Take Your Cat To The Vet Day? While Fluffy no doubt prefers Hug Your Cat Day or Cat World Domination Day, keeping up with your kitty’s veterinary care needs is very important. Of course, many of our feline pals absolutely hate car rides. Read on as a local Mt. Pleasant, SC vet offers some tips on making the trip easier for your cat.

Safety

Always keep Fluffy in a carrier for travel. Letting your cat move freely in the car is very dangerous! Fluffy could climb on you, or get under your feet. She could also step on the power-window button and open the window. Also, never leave your feline buddy in the car, especially in hot weather. Temperatures inside a parked car can reach deadly levels in just minutes!

Carrier

Does your feline friend run for cover when she sees her carrier? If so, get your kitty used to her carrier by leaving it out between appointments. Add some comfy bedding to make it nice and cozy. A little catnip won’t hurt, either. Also, play with your furry pal near her carrier, and give her toys and treats in it. (Note: reverse psychology may also work here. If you tell Fluffy not to get into the carrier, she’ll probably immediately hop in and curl up for a nap.)

The Car Ride

Fluffy and Fido have very different opinions on car rides. Many of our canine pals love riding around with their humans. Cats? Not so much. Keep a window cracked, and turn the AC on, so that your furry friend always has fresh air. You may also want to keep the radio playing. The music may help soothe your pet, or at least give her something to meow along to. Last but not least, try to avoid bumpy routes and/or sudden stops and starts.

Keeping Kitty Calm

If your cute pet gets extremely anxious in the car, ask your vet about using cat-calming products, such as treats and sprays. Talking to your furry buddy can also help soothe her. For long-distance trips, you may want to consider medicating your cat. This may make the journey easier on both of you!
