Tips for Choosing Cat Furniture

Does your kitty have some furniture of her own, some pieces she doesn’t have to share with her humans? If so, that’s great! Cats really appreciate and benefit from having some things that were made just to suit them. However, kitty ‘purrniture’ is not-one-size-fits-all. In this article, an Isle of Palms, SC vet offers advice on choosing Fluffy’s things.

Kittens

Baby cats are very lively and playful, to put it mildly. Keep your frisky feline entertained by getting her a fun activity center, which incorporates things like ladders and dangling feather toys. We recommend choosing one that is big enough for an adult cat, though, as little Fluffy will grow quickly.

Senior Cats

Senior cats are generally very calm and mellow, and are usually more interested in napping than in playing. They also sometimes have a hard time jumping or climbing to their favorite spots. Choose something that isn’t high off the ground, so your kitty will be able to get in and out (or on and off) more easily.

Timid Cats

Do you have a scaredy cat on your hands? Pick things that offer Fluffy an enclosed area that she can hide in if she feels frightened. This could be a pet tent or tipi, or a cat tower with an enclosed level.

Judgmental Cats

Does your feline overlord like to supervise you, often with a somewhat smug look on her face? Offer your cat something tall, like a cat tower or kitty shelves, so she can get a good view of her kingdom.

Multiple Kitties

If you have more than one cat, you’ll need to opt for pieces that can fit all of your furry buddies at once. You don’t want Fluffy and Mittens fighting over the cat tower! (Note: if all of your pets are on the cat tower at once, the one on the top level is the official boss kitty.)

Any Cat

No matter how big, small, young, or old your furry pal is, she’ll appreciate having some soft beds. Store-bought beds are fine, but you can also just fold up some blankets and put them in a box or wicker basket. Rearrange your kitty’s beds now and then, to keep things fresh and fun for her.
